Understanding ADHD
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects a child’s ability to focus, stay organized, and regulate their behavior. ADHD can manifest differently in each child, with some displaying primarily inattentive symptoms, others showing hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, and many having a combination of both. With the right strategies, students with ADHD can thrive both in school and at home.
Home Strategies
Parents of children with ADHD can use a variety of learning strategies to help their child succeed, including establishing routines, providing clear expectations, and rewarding positive behavior.
Establish Routines
Create a daily schedule that includes meals, homework, and play time.
Post the schedule in a visible place, and involve your child in creating it.
Establish a consistent bedtime routine.
Lay out clothes the night before.
Provide Clear Expectations
Write down rules and expectations, and post them somewhere your child can see them.
Give clear, simple directions.
Make sure your child understands what is expected of them.
Reward Positive Behavior
Praise your child for good behavior more often than you criticize bad behavior.
Use a points system where your child can earn points for good behavior.
Offer immediate rewards like spending time with you.
Use Logical Consequences
Explain the consequences of breaking rules.
Use logical consequences, like time out, instead of punishment.
Be consistent with your discipline system.
Communicate with Other Caregivers
Discuss your child's goals and expectations with other caregivers and teachers.
Work together to be consistent with behavioral techniques.
